Title Having Pen pal with the Opposite Sex

Date 9/15/2004
Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kutty

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake. May Allah reward you abundantly for your interest in knowing the teachings of your religion, Islam!

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

“We are not allowed to have pen pals or e-pals with members of the opposite sex; it is forbidden in Islam; for Allah the creator of humankind knows our strengths and weaknesses; hence He has given us laws whose sole purpose is to guard us against our own evil inclinations. Once the door is open for free and indiscriminate interaction between members of opposite sex, it is a slippery slop; so it is best to shut the door closed.”
